Abstract

1455118 Automatic control of steering ELECTRICAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 19 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 59996/72 Heading G3R A vehicle is automatically guided by a system in which error signals derived from a sensing head and guidance conductor are combined with D.C. reference voltages and a sawtooth waveform to control one or the other independent brakes on opposite sides of the vehicle. The sawtooth is generated at 3 from pulses produced by a wheel unit 1 and shaped at 2, the arrangement being such that the mean level of the sawtooth is related to wheel speed. However, for guidance purposes this speed information is blocked by capacitors 16, 17 in applying the sawtooth to operational amplifiers 14, 15. The guidance error is produced at 11 from sensors 11 a and the D.C. reference voltages from potential divider Rl, P1, R2. The output from 14 or 15 (according to direction of error) comprises pulses, the spaces between which correspond to the magnitude of the error and control the appropriate brake 9a or 9b via amplifiers 8a, 8b. The mean value of the sawtooth is compared at 6 with a reference 7; in the event of overspeed output pulses from 6 are supplied to both brake actuators via OR gates 10a, 10b to slow the vehicle, and also to a time delay CR network 8 which, if the overspeed pulses continue shuts off the engine at 9.
