Abstract

1454498 Preparation of lubricating oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 11 Dec 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 57472/72 Heading C5E Lubricating oil is made by contacting a mineral oil with an organic peroxide of the formula R-O-O-R<SP>1</SP>, in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are alkyl, aryl or acyl groups; the mineral oil used has an initial boiling point of at least 360‹ C. and a wax content of less than 10% by weight and has been obtained in the distillation of either a crude mineral oil or a hydrocrackate originating from the hydrocracking of a mineral oil fraction having a wax content of less than 40%. The yield of lubricating oil can be increased by including C 6 -C 20 mono-olefins in the feed. The oils prepared meet the 10W/30, 10W/40, 20W/40 or 20W/50 specification either as such or after the incorporation of 5-12À5% by weight of an additive package containing no polymeric viscosity index improver. The treatment can be carried out with 2À5-30 wt. per cent peroxide at 100-225‹ C. for 5 min.- 10 hours. The feeds treated in the examples are (a) a topped at 400‹ C., dewaxed hydrocrackate from the hydrocracking of a deasphalted oil, (b) a mixture of 100 p.b.w. feed (a) with 40 p.b.w. C 14 -C 16 mono-olefins, (c) a mixture of 100 p.b.w. of feed (a) with 30 p.b.w. C 11 -C 12 monoolefins, and (d) a mixture of 100 p.b.w. furfural extracted, dewaxed spindle oil and 50 p.b.w. C 14 -C 16 mono-olefins.
