Abstract

1453973 Laminates DUNLOP Ltd 25 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 4052/73 Heading B5N A method of producing a composite of a thermoset resin and a vulcanized unsaturated rubber comprises treating the surface of the vulcanized rubber with a modifying agent selected from concentrated nitric acid, a halogen-substituted isocyanuric acid and a salt of a mono- or di-chloroisocyanuric acid, applying a thermosettable resin to the treated surface and then curing the resin to a thermoset state. The rubber may be a styrene-butadiene rubber, natural rubber, nitrile rubber, polybutadiene or polychloroprene. The modifying agent may be applied to the rubber surface by dipping, spraying or brushing and preferably comprises trichloroisocyanuric acid or the sodium salt of dichloroisocyanuric acid. When nitric acid is used, it is preferably employed in the form of a gel or paste containing silica powder. The resin may be an epoxy, phenol-formaldehyde or melamine-aldehyde resin and may be reinforced with fibrous materials, e.g. glass fibres, the examples describing the use of resin-impregnated woven glass fabric sheets.
