Abstract

Discarded fibre reinforced plastic elastomeric material, e.g motor tyres or polyvinyl chloride conveyer belting, is cut up and a predetermined quantity of the pieces of which one or more are of large size in relation to the others compressed and heated in a mould so as to be adhesively secured together to form the moulded body required, e.g. a wheel or roller. The pieces comprise pellets of such small size as to be randomly orientated and one or more large pieces, e.g. discs, which are mounted in a predetermined position as on a core the pellets being introduced around the discs. The heat may be applied directly to the mould, but in the case of articles of relatively thick cross-section it is preferable to heat the pieces before introduction into the mould and if necessary also to heat the mould. When rubber is used, the pieces may first be coated with liquid rubber or rubber solution and in the case of polyvinyl chloride with polyvinyl chloride paste. The ratio of coating material to fibre reinforced material is from 1 : 4 to 1 : 8. An insert, e.g. a nylon bearing bush, may be mounted in the mould cavity and have keying formations whereby it becomes secured to the body produced.
