Abstract
1453360 Observation platform TAKENAKA KOMUTEN CO Ltd 21 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 02653/74 Heading E1H [Also in Division B7] A floating vessel for underwater observation comprises an annular hull 1 and an observation tower 2 mounted in the centre thereof of vertical movement relative to the hull I by means of pulleys 11, 17 and ropes 14, 15, the tower 2 having a ballast tank 3 at its upper end and an observation chamber with windows 5 at its lower end, and the tower 2 being rotatable, by a device 30, relative to the hull 1. The hull 1 may be towed to a suitable site and moored there by means of anchors 48 secured to winches 47. Three decks 26 for passengers are provided on the hull and masts 9 and frames 10 thereon provide a turret for housing the tower 2 in its raised position; with the observation chamber received in a recess 49 in the hull. The towing operation is carried out with the tower 2 raised. When lowered to the position shown a deck 28 carried by the tower 2 is aligned with one of the decks 26 allowing passenger access to an elevator (not shown) and to a double spiral staircase 7, 8 within the tower 2 and leading down to the observation chamber. Lamps 51 suspended from the hull 1 aid in observation from the windows 5. The pulleys 17 are carried on a member 16 which allows the tower to rotate under the control of the device 30 which is in the form of a motor driving a pinion which engages with a gear ring carried beneath the decks 28 when the tower 2 is in its lowermost position, as shown.
