Abstract

1453293 Electron guns RCA CORPORATION 5 Nov 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 51322/73 Heading H1D A method of assembling a cathode 31 and an apertured grid 23 with their confronting surfaces a precise distance S apart, comprises positioning the surfaces a reference distance R apart, moving the cathode and grid towards each other a distance R-S and fixing the cathode and grid together. In an electron gun the method avoids relatively large changes in the screen grid cut off voltage due to arcing between the cathode and control grid caused by variations in S. An electron gun assembly 21 comprises 3 in-line guns 22a, 22b, 22c each with a cathode 31 having an emitting surface 36, control, screen, first and second accelerating and focusing grids 23, 24, 25, 26 with aligned apertures. The electrodes are fixed on two glass rods 27a, 27b. The electrodes are assembled on a "span-set" unit 38 comprising a two part carriage (39) Fig. 2 (not shown) holding assembly 20 without the cathodes, a carriage (40) holding a cathode 31, a measurement probe assembly (41) and a welding assembly (42). Carriage (39) includes front and rear members 47, (48) connected by a vernier adjuster (53). The probe assembly 41 includes distance gauges 81, 82. Gauge 81 comprises a nozzle 83 from which air impinges on a surface 37 of grid 23 and the back pressure varies according to the distance between the nozzle and the surface. The distance between gauge 82 and cathode emitter surface 35 is measured capacitatively. The carriage member 47 and cathode 31 are moved until zero readings are obtained on gauges 81, 82. The member 47 is retracted a known distance, probe assembly 41 is moved, member 47 is moved to its non-retracted position and then moved a distance X-S to accurately position the cathode in the assembly with respect to the grid. The cathode and grid are then welded together by the assembly (42) comprising 4 welding guns arranged radially about the assembly axis 44 and moved pneumatically. The assembly 20 is then moved laterally on a slide (56) to align another gun with the next cathode to be inserted. The span set unit is semi automatic. The cathode may be a dispenser type; the guns may be arranged in a delta.
