Abstract

In a method of measuring the beam landing characteristic of a shadow mask colour display cathode ray tube a detector arrangement, for light radiation resulting from electron excitation of a particular luminescent material present in the form of phosphor dots on the screen is positioned in the path of the radiation from a part of the screen area and in order to be substantially insensitive to light radiation resulting from the electron excitation of other screen areas may include a filter; a tube gun corresponding to the particular material is caused to emit an electron beam while the other beams are cut-off; the beam is scanned over the part of the area; a magnetic field is applied to the tube for purity correction in a given direction and its value is stepped between two values for different periods of the scan, the difference in values being such as to give a beam deflection between one value and the other in the order of the diameter of a dot of the luminescent material or the diameter of the spot formed by incidence of the electron beam on the screen, whichever is greater; the D.C. level of the purity field is adjusted so that the detector gives substantially the same output for each of said values and its value is a measure of the initial beam mislanding in the said direction. The same arrangement may be applied to obtaining a measure of the mislanding in a second direction which may be perpendicular to the first. Suitable stepped waveforms are exemplified and a commutator circuit in which they are developed and applied to the tube is described.
