Abstract

1453170 Removing dust &c generated in industrial processes VEREINIGTE METALLWERKE RANSHOFEN - BERNDORF AG 27 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 42157/74 Heading F4X [Also in Division C7] A hood for extracting waste gases &c. produced by an aluminium electrolysis cell comprises longitudinally extending sloping side cover members 6 hinged at their upper end to a transverse beam which forms part of a framework 8, and a gas extraction pipe 14 of rectangular cross-section having a plurality of lateral openings or slots 15 adjacent the region where anode rods 5 pass through the hood. The ends of the hood are closed by fixed cover members 12 and triangular members 13 attached to the sloping members 6. A frame 2 erected over the cathode bath 1 supports two anode carriers 3 and anode blocks 4 which are secured to the carriers by the rods 5; the anode carriers are displaceable vertically within certain limits with the aid of lifting means (not shown). The waste gases entering the pipe 14 through openings 15 adjacent the top of the hood are conveyed to a gas extraction piping system (not shown) via lateral connections 16. Access to the cell for breaking up incrustations, adding aluminium oxide, removing liquid aluminium &c. is achieved by swinging each longitudinally extending cover member 6 upwardly about hinges 7 with the aid of a piston-cylinder unit 11. To enable the anodes and the rods to be changed the entire framework 8, together with the cover member 6, can be swung up about shafts 9 at the upper part of the frame 2 into the top position shown in chain-dotted lines in Fig. 3, by means of a motor drive 10.
