Abstract

1428293 Walking beam furnaces NIPPON STEEL CORP 18 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973 2 May 1973] 02448/74 Heading F4B In a walking beam type furnace 1 having movable skid rails 21 and fixed skid rails 11, the latter are supported by uprights 12 from cross beams 16 fixed to side walls 2 and the former by uprights 22 from the hearth 23 which is given the necessary parallelogrammic movement by driving devices 31. The hearth 23 has water seals 4 and the rails, beams and uprights are water cooled. In a modification (Fig. 2) showing a wider furnace the cross beam (16) has a central supporting upright (17) extending through the furnace hearth (23) into the foundations (6). Two supporting uprights may also be used (Fig. 13). Another modification, Fig. 4, has transverse scrapers 51 disposed at intervals along the furnace and fixed in the side walls. During the upper horizontal movement of the hearth the scrapers discharge scale towards openings in the hearth feeding discharge shoots 55 which may be cleared by water jets. The drive for the hearth is conventional, a bell crank drive operated by a fluid motor being shown diagrammatically (Figs. 6 and 7). The hearth may be sloped downwardly and outwardly (Fig. 9) or downwardly and inwardly (Fig. 10) to run scale off into collecting chambers.
