Abstract

1,241,009. Walking beam conveyers for furnaces. MIDLAND-ROSS CORP. 14 Oct., 1968 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 48567/68. Heading F4B. In a furnace 20 incorporating a walking beam conveyer having a fixed set of tubular rails 64 and a reciprocable carriage 100 with a movable set of rails 94 for intermittently and alternatively holding and conveying a series of slabs, blooms or billets 80 during their passage through the furnace, said carriage is mounted on a pair of parallel girders 102 vertically reciprocated by six eccentrics 160 and is driven longitudinally by a pair of crank-shafts 204 through connecting rods 220. The eccentrics 160 are driven in unison from a single electric motor through a series of right-angle drives 164, main shafts 170, pinions 166 and ring gears 168. Another motor drives the crank-shafts 204 through a drive train including pinion gears 210 and ring gears 208. The rails 64 are supported by tubular columns 62 with end columns 62<SP>1</SP>, 62<SP>11</SP> formed by extensions of said rails, cooling water being supplied by columns 62<SP>1</SP> and taken off by columns 62<SP>11</SP>. Elbow pipes extending down the columns 62 divert water therethrough (Fig. 8). Rails 94 are similarly supported by columns 92 which extend through slots 96 in the furnace hearth 26 formed with skirts 122 depending into longitudinal water troughs 124 to form seals. The rails 64 and 94 are covered with refractory and formed with pads 82 supporting the workpieces 80. Fixed paddles 136, 138 in the reciprocated troughs 124 urge scale into an accumulator 140 at the end of each trough 124. Each accumulator is flushed by operating a pneumatic motor 142 lifting a plunger 144 with a plug 146 to allow scale and water to escape into a discharge trough 152. At the top of the plunger stroke a closure member 150 shuts off the flow of water. Workpieces 80 are pushed on to an entry table 234 by a ram 232 and extractor arms 236 reach into the furnace and serially lift them on to an extractor table 238. The furnace has upper burners 50 and lower burners 52 in the side walls which also have flue ports opening into a valve-controlled chimney 54 at each side.
