Abstract

854,359. Electric induction furnaces. SALEM ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 4, 1957 [Nov. 4, 1955], No. 31521/55. Class 39(3). [Also in Group XII] A continuous furnace for heat treating metal billets 6 comprises separate sections 2 of refractory cement 3 enclosing an induction coil 5 and lined with a refractory tube 4, each end of each section being formed with a transverse recess, so that, when the sections are assembled end to end, openings 7 are formed at each junction. The induction coils are so rated as to divide the tunnel into a slow preheating zone, a rapid treating zone, and a soaking zone. At the leading end of each section is a work support 8 (not shown) comprising overlapping, superimposed wedges 9 and 10, Fig. 4, the latter being adjusted by a manually rotatable shaft 11 to vary the support height. Alternatively the wedges may be adjustably arranged side by side transversely of the corresponding opening 7. A beam structure 15 extending below the furnace carries at each opening 7 brackets 14 supporting a roller 12, and is supported by pivoted arms 20 connected at each end to pvioted levers 21, 22. Some of the levers 22 are bell cranks connected to a rod 24, reciprocated from a crank 26 to move the rollers periodically through the openings 7 raising the billets off the supports 8. The rollers may be positively driven through sprocket gearing 18 to move the billets, or they may be idling rollers, movement of the billets being imparted by an incoming billet driven by a ram 19. The latter is timed to move a billet from a loading station 27 into the furnace as the rollers reach the extreme uppermost position, and synchronised doors may be fitted at the tunnel ends. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the rollers 12 are replaced by refractory blocks suspended on pivoted arms and given continuous alternate vertical and horizontal movements after the manner of a walking- beam conveyer by a system of pivoted levers with horizontal rods mounted eccentrically at one end of the furnace on gear wheels disposed on opposite sides of a driven gear wheel.
