Abstract

1503985 Fume removal in fused bath electrolysis ALUMINIUM PECHINEY 8 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 14338/75 Heading C7B An Al-producing S÷derberg cell is characterized by the provision of two displaceable panels 16 along its long sides which sealingly engage the anode sheath 4 at their upper edges and which are spaced at their lower edges from the side of the cell to allow air ingress, and at each end a fixed panel 17 which is sealingly closed laterally by the panels 16. The space enclosed by the panels covers the electrolyte surface, and is connected at least at one end of the cell to a suction and gas-treatment device. Fig. 2 shows the fixed panel and gas collection devices; Fig. 4 is a transverse part-section partelevation, the references with apostrophes showing the panels 16 displaced for cell access. Each panel is pivoted on an arm 21, 22 and is lifted by a crank arm 29 connected to a jack 33, 34. Part 36 is a tubular stiffener extending the length of each panel. Parts 19 are seals. Each panel 16 has a lateral extension 46 which in use forms an extension of the panels 17. A counterweight 25 balances panels 16. A horizontal gas collection channel 55 with orifices 50 extends the length of the anode sheath 4 and is connected at least at one end to a gas collector 18, Fig. 2. The anode sheath 4 may have a skirt 12 around its base for collection of anode fumes, which are drawn off at 15. These fumes may be consumed in a burner 13 inside the hooded space, the hood gases forming the combustion support gases for this by way of orifices 14. The gases may be collected in concentric channels which are common to pairs of adjacent cells.
