Abstract

1452774 Torque balanced wire ropes USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS INC 22 Nov 1973 [22 Nov 1972] 54316/73 Heading D1T A torque balanced regular lay wire rope formed by twisting together three to six strands at an angle of lay greater than 7‹, each strand being formed by twisting outer steel wires about a centre core at an angle of lay which is at least 1¥ times the lay of the strands, and in which the steel wires are position-fixed by a stress relief at a temperature of between 600 and 1150‹F, is characterized in that the rope includes at least one insulated electrical conductor of non-ferrous material, the insulation of the conductor maintaining the location of the conductor relative to adjacent steel wires in the rope. The insulated conductor or conductors may be the centre core of the rope; the centre core of at least one strand of the rope; or be located in the outer valleys between strands. In the latter instance the rope may be stress relieved before the insulated conductors are placed in the valleys. If the rope is sheathed in insulating material the melting point of the insulating material around the conductor or conductors should be greater than the melting point of the insulating material of the sheath. When the sheath is included before the cable is stress relieved it is of a kind that will retain some plasticity when subjected to the stress relieving temperatures, for example radiation cross linked polyolefin; tetra fluoro ethylene; fluorinated ethylene propylene; and cross linked poly vinylidene fluoride.
