Abstract

1451774 Winding packages with normal or inclined ends F M N SCHUSTER & CO 31 Oct 1973 [10 Nov 1972 18 June 1973] 50555/73 Heading D1J A thread winding apparatus of the kind in which the package is driven by a drum is characterized in that to enable packages to be wound whose ends are normal to the package axis or inclined to the package axis the thread guide 7, Fig. 1, is traversed to-and-fro by a reverse thread roller 6, the traverse stroke of the thread guide 7 being influenced by a guide rail 10 that is controlled via an operating rod 26 and a lever 29 by the movement of a spool cradle pivoting in response to increasing package diameter; there being a control device 32, 34 for additionally influencing the movement of the guide rail 10, said control device 32, 34 including a fulcrum 38 about which the lever 29 rocks, the fulcrum 38 being displaceable along the lever 29. The thread guide 7 is pivoted at a first pivot point 8 to a first slide 4 through which extends a guide rod 3. The slide 4 has a cam follower (not shown) sliding in grooves 5 of the thread roller 6. The thread guide 7 is also pivoted at a second pivot point to a second slide 9 which can traverse to and fro along the guide rail 10. The guide rail 10, which is pivoted at 11 to a third pivot point on a fixed block 12, is of inverted U-section to provide a channel in which the second slide 9 moves. A spring 37 presses the guide rail 10 against the fulcrum 38. Packages with ends normal to spool axis. If the device 32 is moved to a setting such that the fulcrum 38 is aligned with the pivot 31 between the guide rail 10 and the lever 29 then, as the package increases in diameter and the rod 26 rocks the lever 29 anti-clockwise in Fig. 1 about pivot 31, the increasing package size will have no effect on the guide rail 10 since the fulcrum 38 is in line with the pivot 31. The guide rod 10 does not, as a result, rock about its pin 11 as the package increases in diameter and the thread guide 7 is then controlled solely by the reverse thread roller 6 to produce a package with ends that are normal to the spool axis. Packages with tapered ends. If the device 32 is moved to a setting such that the fulcrum 38 is spaced away from the pivot 31, as in Fig. 1, then as the package increases in diameter and the rod 26 moves the lever 29 anticlockwise about the pivot 31 the resulting tendancy of the lever 29 to move away from the fulcrum 38 is countered by the spring 37 rocking the guide rail 10 clockwise in Fig. 1 so that the lever 29 is maintained in contact with the fulcrum 38. As the package increases in diameter the guide rail 10 is rocked clockwise about its pivot 11 and this causes the effective traverse of the tip of the thread guide 7 to reduce gradually with increasing package diameter and so produce a package with tapered ends. The greater the spacing of the fulcrum 38 from the pivot 31 the more rapid is the reduction of traverse length with increasing package diameter. Packages with concave ends. To form packages with concave ends the fulcrum 38 has an arcuate form that causes a linear movement of the rod 26, as the package diameter increases, to be non-linearly transmitted to the pivotal guide rail 10 as the lever 29 rolls around the arcuate face 38 of the slide block 32. In this way the lever ratio between the pivots 30, 31 alters continuously. This aspect of the invention is particularly described with reference to Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown). Superimposed yarn displacement. The fulcrum 38 is rigid with a push rod 33, Fig. 4, that is moved to-and-fro within a small predetermined range by means of an eccentric or the like. This causes fulcrum 32 to move to- and-fro on each of the oblique faces 36a, 36b of a notch 36. In this way, the angle of the pivotal guide rail 10 is continuously altered by a predetermined small amount, and this correspondingly influences the stroke length of the thread guide 7. Fig. 14 shows a further embodiment for this small superimposed yarn displacement. As the push rod 33 makes its small to-and-fro movement it causes the fulcrum 32a to move up and down the inclined face 52 of a pusher 49. This causes a continual small change in the setting of the fulcrum point with a corresponding continued small change in the setting of the yarn guide 7. The small oscillation of the push rod 33 is such that the surface 53 of the fulcrum 32a does not engage shoulders 52a, 52b on the pusher 49. To change the inclination of the tapered ends of the package to push rod 33 is displaced to cause the surface 53 to engage shoulder 52a or shoulder 52b and so move to pusher 49 to a different setting, the pusher 49 having resilient means that then releases itself from one catch hole 51 and re-engages in a different catch hole 51 of a fixed strip 48. In all of the embodiments the fulcrum 32 may have a detachable cap 39 replaceable by different caps so that the shape of the arcuate surface 38 can be varied.
