Abstract

1451713 Golf club shafts BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 11 March 1974 [16 July 1973] 10774/74 Heading A6D A tapered, tubular golf club shaft comprises at least three layers of carbonaceous (e.g. graphite) fibres, the fibres in any one layer being parallel, the fibres of any layer extending in a different direction from those of an adjacent layer, and the fibres of all the layers being embedded in a cured resinous (e.g. epoxy) binder. The fibres of one layer other than the outermost layer extend parallel to the shaft axis. The fibres of the other layers lie at angles of 0‹-45‹ and some at angles of 10‹-30‹ to the shaft axis. Each layer may comprise a tape including longitudinally-extending fibres. The first tape is wrapped, cigarette-paper fashion. around a mandrel, successive layers being helically wound at varying angles. The fibres may have a Young's modulus of 20-80 x 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i. Some layers extend over only part of the length of the shaft. The narrow end of the shaft may include more layers than the larger end.
