Abstract

1451551 Measuring weight per unit area by radiation gauge MEASUREX CORP 10 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 30565/74 Heading G1A The weight per unit area of a moving stretchable web of material held under tension between rolls 2-3, and winding reel 28, is measured at the location of the reel by calculation from the value of the weight per unit area or thickness at location 26 and the speed and/or width of the material at both locations. Measurement of weight per unit area by a radiation gauge 27 of the absorption measurement type which is scanned across the width of the web, is carried out at location 27 so that it is nearer to the point at which feedback control is applied, which would not be accurate if the measurement were made at the winding position. The width of the strip is measured by a photo-electric sensing apparatus forming part of the gauge 27 and using a light path which is interrupted by the edge of the strip, the travel of the apparatus between the two edges being indicative of the width. The speed of the web is measured by tachometer coupled to the idler wheel 26. Alternatively, the gauge 27 is a pneumatic device.
