Abstract

1450731 Drying webs GASTON COUNTY DYEING MACHINE CO 30 Jan 1974 [22 Feb 1973 6 Aug 1973] 4293/74 Heading F4G The invention relates to an apparatus for drying a web W of material. The apparatus comprises a suction slot 210, means for passing the web W over the suction slot 210 with the slot extending in use transversely of one face of the web W, a pressure slot 220 aligned with the suction slot 210 and adjacent in use the other face of the web, means, e.g. a blower 224, for impressing suction at the suction slot, and, e.g. a blower 230, for delivering air under pressure through the pressure slot. As shown the suction slot 210 forms part of a suction chamber 212 which is mounted non-rotatably within a honeycomb roll 214 driven by a motor 216. A further suction chamber-roll combination 212<SP>1</SP>, 214<SP>1</SP> is also provided. Drying gas may be circulated through the pressure slot 220 to the suction slot and thence back to the pressure slot by a single blower. The roll 214 comprises a plurality of annular members 14 which interfit and are held together by a plurality of tie rods 22 passing through aligned bores 44 in the members 14 and being tensioned by a spring 26. Each annular member 14 has a base portion 40 and radially extending partition portions 42 which has as thin a radially outer edge as mechanically possible considering the load to be carried and the constructional stability of the roll, the free radially extending edge of each partition portion being provided with a rib 50 and an edge portion 54 for co-operation with complementary formations on an adjacent base portion 40. The plurality of connected annular members 14 are mounted by means of end flanges 18 on mounting flanges 28 one of which is secured to a sprocket member 32. The roll rotates on bearings 34 which are connected by spider arrangements to a member 36 communicating with the suction slot. The annular members 14 may be of plastics material and the tie rods stainless steel wire. The annular members may be glued or fused together or form a snap fitting one with another.
