Abstract

1450504 Image pick-up tube HITACHI Ltd 10 Sept 1974 [5 Oct 1973] 39354/74 Heading HID In the manufacture of the photo-electric converter plate of a colour pick-up tube with a known stripe filter, 2 (e.g. diohroic interference filter) on substrate 1, defects due to consequent irregularities in the overlying transparent conductive and photo-conductive layers 5, 6 are avoided by applying a transparent inorganic layer on the filter before addition of layers 5, 6, the applied layer being double or inhomogeneous with the first part nearest the filter deposited under inert gas and O 2 , and the later parts being deposited with lower O 2 partial pressure. For example, layers 3 and 4 may be of silica, layer 3 being 2 Ám thick, i.e. thinner than the stripes 2, sputtered under 10<SP>-3</SP> Torr of inert gas, e.g. Ar, containing O 2 at 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr forming near stoichiometric SiO 2 which inhibits discoloration of the filter, and layer 4 being 8 Ám thick and sputtered with O 2 reduced to 10<SP>-7</SP> Torr forming SiO n (n= 1.6-1.8). On layer 4, optionally ground optically flat, layers 5 and 6 are deposited. The atmosphere in the second stage may be oxygen free. In place of double layer 3, 4, a single layer may be deposited with gradually falling oxygen concentration. Silica may be replaced for example by another oxide or oxide glass.
