Abstract

1450241 Coated magnetic particles SONY CORP 17 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973] 2344/74 Heading B2E A circular magnetic metal particles, e.g. Co, Co-Ni alloy, Fe-Co alloy, Fe-Ni alloy or Fe- Ni-Co alloy, are coated with a protective layer by mixing powdered metal and I to 6% of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a C 6 to C 26 fatty acid in an inert organic solvent, e.g. toluene, benzene, xylene or cyclohexane, and mechanically mixing to form a chemical bond between the particles and the fatty acid salt. Suitable fatty acid salts include sodium stearate, oleate, linoleate, linolenate and ricisoleate. The fatty acids may have a double bond in their carbon chain and may include a substituent, e.g. OH. The coated particles may be mixed with a binder, e.g. a mixture of vinyl chloride, vinyl and a solvent and coated on a base, e.g. acetate copolymer and polyurethane rubber polyester to form a magnetic recording medium.
