Abstract

1449839 Electrodepositable resins PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 14 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 57945/73 Heading C3B A synthetic resin contains quaternary ammonium, phosphonium or ternary sulphonium groups, blocked isocyanate groups and OH groups. The resins are stable in the presence of water at room temperature but cross-link at elevated temperatures by reaction between the isocyanate and hydroxyl groups. The resins are prepared by: (A) reacting an epoxy resin containing hydroxyl groups with a semi-blocked polysiocyanate, containing an average of about one free NCO group per molecule; (B) reacting the intermediate, which contains free epoxy groups, with amine salts, phosphine-acid mixtures, or sulphide-acid mixtures so as to introduce quaternary ammonium or phosphonium groups or ternary sulphonium groups. The final product may be free of or may contain epoxy groups. The resins may be dispersed in water with conventional additives for electrodeposition in which process the object to be coated forms the cathode of the circuit.
