Abstract

1449765 Drilling tools POCLAIN 22 Feb 1974 [12 March 1973] 8274/74 Heading E1F A drilling tool includes an auger driven by a motor via a transmission incorporating a ram operable to superimpose a cyclic angular movement on the continuous rotation of the motor. In the embodiment shown, the tool is adapted to be suspended at a pivot 4 and includes a hydraulic motor 5 driving the auger shaft 16 via shafts 27, 12 which are respectively fast with plates 26, 23 interconnected by a doubleacting hydraulic ram 32 pivoted to eccentric pins 31, 24 on the plates. Plate 26 has a hub 39 received in a stationary sleeve 29 to which supply and return lines 19, 20 connect, the sleeve having arcuate grooves 42, 43, an annular groove 41 permanently connected to the. supply line 19 and to groove 42, and passages 37, 37a and 38, 38a, 38b communicating respectively with the ram via hoses 35, 36, the arrangement being that the rod end of the ram is alternately connected to the supply line via 37, 37a while the head end is alternately connected to the supply line via passages 38, 38a and to the return line 20 via passages 38, 38b, and groove 43. The auger may also be simultaneously subjected to axial vibrations. An external control valve may alternatively be used to regulate the operation of the ram instead of embodying the valve features in the sleeve 29 and hub 39. The hydraulic motor 5 may be driven by a pump via an adjustable speed-control restrictor. The frequency of the cyclic angular movement imposed by the ram may be varied by varying the number of each of the grooves 42, 43 in the sleeve 39.
