Abstract

1295153 Tunnelling machines SMITH INTERNATIONAL INC 23 April 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 35288/71 Divided out of 1295152 Heading E1F A transmission assembly for a mining machine comprises a housing, a rotor supported within the housing by two radial bearings and having at opposite ends means for releasable attachment to a rotatable cutter and to a drive shaft, and a thrust bearing located between an interior housing shoulder and an exterior rotor shoulder. The assembly described comprises a housing 210, attached by bolts 211 to movable machine frame 110, and a rotor 220 supported within the housing by bearings 240, 250. Rotation is imparted to cutter 300 by shaft 130 via splined coupling 150, 155 and rotor 220. Thrust is imparted to the cutter by jacks, bearing on housing shoulder 215, via housing shoulder 217, thrust bearing 230 and rotor shoulder 225. The rotor supports a similar transmission assembly, for a centre drill, within recess 227, the drill being rotated by shaft 410 via rotor 460. Housing 470 rotates with rotor 220, is longitudinally slidable within the recess and is acted on by plate springs 504 which allow the drill to retract. The frame 110 is supported by legs, one of which is attached to the assembly beneath housing 210.
