Abstract

1449634 Cryogenic tanks ISHIKAWAJIMAHARIMA JUKOGYO KK 21 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972 30 Jan 1973] 44349/73 Heading F4P A cryogenic tank comprises a membranous vessel 1 which, at ambient temperature, has dimensions greater than those of a rigid shell within which it is located so that it has to be deformed when placed in the shell at ambient temperature, the deformation being such that at the working cryogenic temperature the membranous vessel contracts to relieve bending stresses therein in order that the vessel is only subject to hoop tension at the low pressure. Numerals la, 1b, 1c in Fig. 4 show the membranous vessel as deformed at ambient temperature, undeformed at ambient temperature, and in its low temperature state respectively. Fig. 6 shows how various panels X, Y, Z, P are connected to form a membrane.
