Abstract

1449585 Transporting Special loads GREER HYDRAULICS Inc 31 Jan 1975 [15 July 1974] 4335/75 Heading B7L An arrangement for transporting ship sections in a shipyard comprises a network of intersecting railway tracks 11, 12, a plurality of trolleys 18 running on the tracks, and carriages 16 supported on the trolleys by double-acting hydraulic piston-and-cylinder assemblies 29, 30. Each carriage consists of two spaced I beams connected by cross members 17, 18. Depending stanchions 19 are provided along each beam. Each trolley comprises side plates 22, 23 connected by members 24, 25 and is driven by a motor M. The trolley carries an hydraulic cylinder 29 and a piston 30 for attachment to the carriage by means of an end cap 31. The latter has a ring gear 33 meshing with a motor-driven pinion 34 when the piston is retracted whereby the piston may be rotated relative to the trolley. In use, the trolleys are positioned at the track intersections and the pistons retracted to lower the carriages until they are supported by engagement of the stanchions 19 with the ground. Further retraction of the pistons lifts the trolleys clear of the tracks whereby they may be rotated through 90 degrees. In an alternative arrangement, the trolleys are towed along the tracks and rotated manually to align them with a second set of tracks.
