Abstract
1449216 Pile drivers SIR B G WHITE W E GELSON A H BECKETT J W T TAPP and G B BRITT [trading as SIR BRUCE WHITE WOLFE BARRY & PARTNERS] 19 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973 22 July 1974] 55738/73 and 32416/74 Heading B3H [Also in Division El] An offshore tower 10 is driven into an underwater substrate by a drop hammer 24 impacting against an anvil 20. Initially the hammer 24, which has a waterfilled ballast chamber 32 and a buoyancy chamber 30, is held at the top of the tower by latches 34 and after striking the anvil 20 is raised by either jacking by three jacks 92 or by flooding the tower above bulkhead 22. To raise the water level in the tower above the surrounding water level a pump 44 is used which also empties the tower. In a preferred embodiment the hammer is of the same order of length as the distance from the top of the tower to the anvil, e.g. 200 metres. It is made up of nine cylindrical sections of gradually greater wall thickness from top to bottom, longitudinally spaced flanges 60 with vent holes (not shown) and at its upper and lower ends has three circumferentially spaced, vertically extending columns of rings 72 which are engaged by latches 84 having release arms 86 and by jacks 92 when being raised.
