Abstract

1447958 Gripping tools H K PORTER CO Inc 26 Feb 1975 8048/75 Headings B4W and B4C A tool for releasably gripping and pulling a rod 8 comprises a support structure 1, a rodclamping assembly 20-26, mounted for movement relative to the structure, means, e.g. hand levers 3, 4 for causing this relative movement and means 27, 31 for releasing a rod from the grip of the clamping assembly at one end of the relative movement. The clamping assembly includes a split clamping washer 24 held in a cupshaped housing 20 the split washer being spring- biased to a gripping position in which it is an interference fit between a rod 8 and the housing. A ridge member 27 mounted on a base portion of the tubular support structure 1 protrudes through an aperture 26 in the base of the clamping assembly when the latter is in its lowermost position relative to the support structure to tilt and thereby release the split washer 24 from its gripping position. In an alternative embodiment the split washer does not engage the rod directly but through two elongate jaws shaped to embrace the rod. The tool is particularly intended for pulling the stem 8 of a roof hook bolt through a fastener disc 9 of a type having a central aperture with an array of barbs or tongues. It is envisaged that the tool may be operated by power means instead of the hand levers 3, 4.
