This invention relates yto Work clamping and holding devices of the type generally termed vises5 and is more particularly. concerned with l a i portable tool having means for attachment toa similar supports and providing relatively v`adjustable vise jawl elements'.v v K A r feature of the invention Vconsists in thev provision of a portable vise having a sup- 101 port embracing clamp detachably engaged Y Withits fixed jaw' in combination Witha pair'of Avise jawsof screw adjustable ,type l.constructed and arranged to function asy a i Wrench lwhen detached from said support 1751.5 engaging Clamp i lA- further feature ofthe invention consists .in the provisionrof al pairrof screw adjust- Y able vise-jaws with the .rela;tivel y lxedjaw provided With'a foot extension,A in-combinao tion with a support embracing clamp mounting a jaw base having a recess to receiveand 'means detachably toclampsaid footextension therein.k
" Another featureof, theinvention consists i Y 25 in the provision', in combination witha pair of relatively movablgvisejaws, of ahclainp base attached' to theffixed jawofsaidpair of jaws,
,. mounted upon said, base forv swinging yadi j justment relativelyA theretol about an axis substantially vat right. angles to theline of V aw movement; thereby. making it possible to use the vise under varying conditionsof work andpositions of. asupport relatively thereto.

The bore of the portiono'f the shank 6 that is disposed2 i l'. .when VYthe jawsarey closed may conform in crossfsection with the cross sectional Vcontion 2 of the: shanlrof the jaw 1 may have the shank j6 beyond'thfe outerv end ofthe portherewith? said shank comprising arelatively ylarge non-circular, and-.as shown`, squarein portion 3' of theshank of the jaw 1 against' the shoulder that is produced at the outer end ofthe portion 2 of the shank'of the jaw 1, the inner end portion of the screw 10 being in threaded engagement with the in ternally screw threaded outer end portion 7 ofthe shank 6 of the jaw 5.v The outer end portion ofthe screw 10 is enlarged diametrically to produce an integral ratchet wheel 12 having itsvperiphery curved substantially convexly transversely thereof and formed .with a circumferentially spaced seriesY of ra'- dial sockets 13. The screw 1Y0 is retained on the portion 3 of the shank of the jaw 1 by a washer 14 which abuts the outer end of the screw andra retaining nut 15. The retaining nut 15 engages Vthe screw threaded extreme end portion 4 of the shank of the jaw 1 and is secured to the latter by a set screw 16.
It is manifest that rotation of the screw 10 `in Y one direction aboutV the axis of the shank of the jaw 1 will cause the jaw 5 to move toward the jaw 1 and that reversal of the directionof rotation of the screw 10 will cause a 'reversal of direction of movement of the jaw 5in respect to the jaw 1. A set screw 17 that is carried by the outer Vend portion of the tubular shank 6 of the jaw 5 maybe tightened against the screw 10 to prevent accidental rotation of the screw 10` andV consequently to hold the jaw 5 in adjusted position in respect to the jaw 1.
A lever for operating the screw comprisesa handle bar 19 and a head for embracing the ratchet wheel 12. Said head comprises a section 2O which is integral with the handle barand a cooperating section 21 having a short shank 22 adapted to fit-in aV laterally cut away portion 23 (Fig. 4) on the adjacent end of the handle bar 19 and connected with the handle bar 19 by a transverse pivot element 24. A retaining ring 25is slidable on the handle19 to and from position to overlap the vshank 22 and to then retain the shank 22V completely inthe cut away portion 23' ofthe handle 19 so that the sections 20 and 21 will be retained on the ratchet wheel 12 and will partially encircle the ratchet wheel 12. The sections 20 and 21 are curved transversely to conform substantially to the transverse curvature of the peripheral portion of the ratchet wheel 12. The free end of the shank 22 and the adjacent wall of the cut away portion of the handle 19 are complementarily beveled so as to produce a relatively large contact surface between the handle 19 and the shank 22 when the shank 22 is completely disposed in the cut away portion 23 oi the handle 19. The adjacent ends of the sections 20 and 21 likewise are complementarily beveled so .as to fit neatly .and firmly against each other when the sections 2O and 21 are closed as shown in Figure 3. VVhen the link 25 has been slid along the handle 19 out of engagement .with` the shank 22, the section21 may swing away from the section 20 a distance suticient to permit removal of the lever from the ratchet wheel 12 as suggested in Figure 4.
` The section 21 oi the headv of the lever is formed with an outwardly extending tubular boss 26havingV a head 27 at its outer end formed with the laterally extending flange 28 or marginal edge portion and with a relatively small central opening in axial aline` ment with a larger opening inthe section 21. An actuating pawl '29 extends slidably through the latter opening andV has a reduced rigid shank 30 -which protrudes from the tubular boss 26 through the vopening in the head 27. The outer end portion of the shank 30 is threadedly engaged by an adjusting nut 31 having a laterally extending finger 32 formed with a bentend portion 33 in contact with the edge of the flange 28. Between the nut 31 and headv 27 a convexe-concave spring washer 34 having a notched edge is disposed on the shank 30 and limitsthe inward movement of the pawl 29 in response to the actuation of a compression spring 35 that is coiled about the shank 30 within the contines of the tubular boss 26. The nut 31 can be tightened to expand the spring washer 35 more or less and thereby to permit the pawl 29 to move a greater or less distance toward the center of thefhead actuation of the'spring 35. The extending inner end of the pawl 29 is beveled as indicated and is adapted to enter into one of the sockets 13 in the ratchet wheel 12 when the sections 20 and 21 swinging `of the lever in the axis of the shank of the jaw 1 will cause the screw 10 to turn in the same direction on the shank of the jaw 1, and swinging of the lever in the opposite direction about the axis of the shank of the jaw 1 will not cause rotation of the screw lO for the reason that the beveled face of the pawl V29 will contact with a side wall of the associated socket 13 and will ride out of such socket against the action of the spring 35 onto ratchet wheel 12. In
l moving the jaws 1 'and 5 together,
theV lever will be arranged on the are closed so thatl one direction about the periphery oi' the SOV ot' the lever to respond to the 'ico ratchet wheel 12 so that it will be eective to turn thescrew 10 as required to move the jaw 5 toward the jaw 1 and the lever then may ,be reversed on the riatcheti'wheel' wheniitl is "desired to reversely move the jaws.
