Abstract

1447703 Sword LEON PAUL EQUIPMENT CO Ltd 13 Jan 1975 [8 Jan 1974] 00909/74 Heading F3C A blade 2 for a fencing sword comprises an elongate core 8 having the desired shape of the blade and a covering on the core in the form of a sheath 9 of interwoven filamentary material bonded to the core to form the outer surface of the blade. The core 8 may be made from fibre-reinforced synthetic plastics material, for example glassfibre-reinforced polyester resin, or from metal. The filamentary material may be wire which may be made of stainless steel. The sheath 9 may be bonded to the core 8 by an epoxy or polyester adhesive resin. In an embodiment a fencing sword comprises a handle 1 and a blade 2 held together by a synthetic plastics or metal coupling member 3 having a body 4 with a sleeve 5 extending therefrom. The handle 1 is secured in the sleeve by moulding, for example. The end 6 of the blade 2 is received in a socket of the body 4 and is secured therein by a screw 7. In making the blade 2 a braided steel wire tube is clamped at the end 6 of the core 8 and is axially drawn away from the end 6 and over a point 10. A further clamp is then applied so as to retain the braided tube in position and the blade is dipped into a container of polyester adhesive resin. When the adhesive has set, the clamps are removed and surplus tube is severed from the sheath.
