Abstract

1447683 Injection moulding TZENTRALNA LABORATORIA STEX 24 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 44752/73 Heading B5A A method of injection moulding polymers comprises completely filling a mould by injection and then injecting further polymer one or more times to compensate for shrinkage of previously injected polymer, the further injection being at a rate and temperature sufficient to delay completion of hardening of previously injected polymer, and the interior of the injection mould being subject to a gas pressure during injections of from 0 to 20 MN/m<SP>2</SP>. The polymer may be polyethylene or polypropylene. When a gas pressure is exerted on the mould contents, the gas is inert with respect to the polymer melt, e.g. it may be nitrogen. The method may be carried out using the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprising a moulding chamber 5 connected through gas ducts 7 with a gas chamber 6. The supply of compressed gas from a reservoir is regulated by valves 10, 11 and the connection of the gas chamber 6 to the atmosphere is effected by a valve 13, all the valves being operated by a control device 14 coupled to the control panel of the injection cylinder 1.
