Abstract
1493300 Injection moulding ultra high molecular weight polythene MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 31 Dec 1975 [13 Jan 1975] 53393/75 Heading B5A A process for injection moulding ultra high molecular weight polythene comprises injecting polythene into a mould cavity having a volume 1-5 to 3À0 times that of the injected material, at a shear rate of at least 50,000 see.<SP>-1</SP> at the injection nozzle, to fill the mould with flashed powder and subsequently reducing the volume of the mould to a volume 1.5 times, or less, than that of the injected material to compress the powder into the final article. Porous or solid articles may be made depending upon the degree of compression. Shear rates of 50,000 to 1,000,000 sec.<SP>-1</SP> (particularly 200,000-500,000 see.<SP>-1</SP>) are preferred and cavity volumes of 1.7 to 2.5 times that of the injected material are preferred. Injection temperatures of 140‹ C.- 300‹ C. can be used, depending upon the intrinsic viscosity of the injected material. In the illustrated embodiment, polythene 8 is injected by a plunger 9 from a heated cylinder 10 into the mould cavity defined between a fixed mould part 3 and a mould part 7 movable to compress the injected material by means of a piston and cylinder arrangement 5, 6. Compression may be affected directly after injection or up to one minute or more after it. Low mould cavity temperatures, e.g. 25‹ C. to 75‹ C. (in the specific examples) can be used.
