Abstract

1446817 Making pulps from grasses S WATANABE 1 May 1974 [1 May 1973] 19148/74 Heading D2W A method of making pulp from grasses comprises impregnating a grass in chip form with a 0.5-6% by wt. aqueous solution of an alkaline substance at 10-100‹C, compressing the impregnated grass to remove excess aqueous alkali solution to provide a wet mass of grass, loosening the mass to provide a porous mass of grass, oxidising the porous mass by treatment with oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas at 60-130‹C, washing the oxidised mass with water, and drying it. The grass may be a rice or cereal straw, bagasse, esparto, timothy, chaff, cornstalks, or bamboo. The alkaline substance may be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and/or potassium carbonate. A surfactant e.g. sodium lauryl benzene sulphonate, a polyether sulphate, or polyoxyethylene alkyl ether may be present in the aqueous alkali solution. The oxygen-containing gas may be air.
