Abstract

Printed paper is de-inked by pulping it in an aqueous solution of a non-ionic detergent which is an alkyl phenol-ethylene oxide adduct in an amount of 1-2.5% by weight of the dry paper at a temperature between room temperature and the cloud point of the non-ionic detergent. The water may have a carbonate hardness of at least 20 p.p.m. The non-ionic detergent may be a compound having the formula R-O-C2H4-(-C2H4-)n OH in which R is an alkyl phenyl radical having 9-19 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain and n is an integer of 4-30. Below 10% by weight of the p solution of the dry printed paper which may be shredded is preferably added to the solution and pulping may be continued for 10-50 minutes at 110 DEG -140 DEG F. The pulp may then be diluted with water to a solid content of 0.5-1.5% based on the weight of the solution, separated from the solution, washed, thickened, acidified to a pH of 4-6.5 with, for example, sulphuric acid or SO2, if necessary bleached and washed, and then formed into a web. The recovered pulp may be blended with fresh sulphate or sulphite stock. Specification 991,116 is referred to.
