Abstract

1446766 Surgical drainage appliances T AKIYAMA 7 Nov 1973 [7 Nov 1972 (2)] 51694/73 Heading A5R A drain 11 for the eardrum is formed of a polymeric material capable of absorbing water and swelling. As shown (Fig. 1), the drain 11, which is made of collagen, polyvinyl alcohol a copolymer of meta-acrylic and glycol type, mannitol, or fluorine containing resins, has a cylindrical main part 12 and a cylindrical auxilliary part 13, the main part 12 having a tapered and rounded end 12a. The dimensions 11, 12, t1, t2, d1 and d2 of the drain are disclosed. In an embodiment of an apparatus 21 (Fig. 3) for inserting the drain 11 in the eardrum, a metallic needle 28 is movably received in a tube 27, the rear end 28b of the needle being fixed to a contact element 30. A drain holder 35, which is removably mounted in a hollow cylindrical metallic body 25 by virtue of a resilient fitting between an annular bridge 40 on the cylindrical surface of a portion 37 of the drain holder 35 and a groove 41 formed in a cylindrical inner surface 34a, carries the drains 11 in holes (38). In use, the drain holder 35 is removed from the apparatus 21 and the drain 11 is picked up on the tip 28a by inserting the needle 28, which projects out of the tube 27 on pressing a trigger 31, in the drain. As shown in Fig. 5A, the end 27a of the tube 27 abuts against the bottom 12b (Fig. 1) of the auxiliary part 13 of the drain. By pulling the trigger 31 further, the needle projects out of the drain and the eardrum (44) is punctured. The drain is then inserted in the puncture by pressing against the bottom 12b with the end 27a. As the drain swells on absorbing water after insertion, it is securely held in the eardrum. A guard tube (46) (Fig. 2 not shown) sheathes the tube 27 when the apparatus is not in use. When the drain is made of collagen, it may be left in the eardrum where it dissolves. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, 7 not shown) adapted for pushing a member (55), which is supported by a leaf spring (54), with a thumb there is no provision for storing the drains.
