Abstract

1446167 Lighting fittings; drying printing ink WALLACE KNIGHT Ltd 5 Oct 1973 [5 July 1972] 31546/72 Headings F4R and F4G A lamp, e.g. a mercury vapour lamp for drying printing ink comprises a housing 10 in which is normally located a chassis which includes an arrangement for removably supporting a lamp tube 12 and on which is mounted at least a part of a reflector 13 for the tube, and a guide arrangement on the housing to permit the chasis, including the lamp tube, reflector and mountings, to be slidably withdrawn from one end of the housing. The interior of the housing 10 is divided by a horizontal wall 17 having a central aperture 18 in which is supported the chassis, which comprises opposed L-shaped rails 19 between which the central portion 14 of the reflector 13 is supported. Opposite ends of the reflector portion 14 are joined to transverse walls 24 through which the ends of the lamp 12 extend where they are connected to respective fixings 25. This entire lamp mounting chassis is slid out of engagement with the remainder of the housing by means of its flanges 21 which are located between respective edges of the slot 18 and the guides 22. The lamp reflector 13 is completed by two hollow side reflectors 15, 16 which are pivotable about shafts 28, 29 between an operative position, shown in full lines in Fig. 1, in which with the central portion 14 an elliptical reflector is formed, and an inoperative position, shown in broken lines in Fig. 1. The ultra-violet light emitted by the lamp 12 may be used to dry wet ink on sheet material 11 passing beneath the lamp and in the event of the sheet material 11 stopping, for example, this fact is sensed and a solenoid 38 is operated to pivot the side reflectors 15, 16 into their inoperative position to shield the sheet material and protect it from being damaged by the light from the lamp. The back surfaces 36, 37 of the side reflectors 15, 16 are preferably formed of or coated with a heat-absorbent, non-reflective material. The lamp assembly may be air-cooled by connecting an air extractor fan to the outlet 46 in the housing 10 to draw air through inlet ducts 47 in the housing bottom wall 48.
