Abstract
1384083 Lamps SUN CHEMICAL CORP 25 April 1972 [6 May 1971] 19128/72 Heading F4R [Also in Division H5] In apparatus for curing solvent-free ink in printing apparatus by photopolymerization, the sheets 15 from the print roll 18 are fed by a conveyer past a plurality of sections 26 ... 29, each including an ultra-violet lamp 31, preferably a mercury vapour discharge lamp, and an elliptical reflector 32 mounted in a housing 26 through which cooling air is drawn via a pipe 43 to cool the rear side of the reflector and the lamp sockets. Control circuitry (not described), is referred to, by means of which, if the conveyer speed is reduced, radiation from an appropriate number of the sections is cut-off by the raising of member 54, causing the hinged reflector sections 33 and 34 to close together (Fig. 4, not shown), and the associated lamp circuits to be reduced to a standby value. Holes are provided in the housings 36 to permit the evacuation of ozone; and a plurality of mounting apertures for the ends of each lamp is provided such that by suitable choice from among them the arc-which tends to rise in the lamp-may be arranged to lie in the focal line of the reflector whatever the orientation of the housing with respect to the vertical. A cooling plate 21 is located beneath and spaced from the conveyer.
