Abstract

1446124 Ultrasonic gas-entrainment monitor; sound reflectors UNITED STATES ENERGY RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATION 15 May 1974 [15 May 1973] 21494/74 Headings H4D and H4X Gas bubbles entrained in a liquid in an enclosure are quantified by directing ultrasonic energy radially outwards over a 360 degree arc from a transducer in the enclosure, receiving the energy after reflection from the interior walls of the enclosure and/or from the bubbles, and providing an indication of the attenuation of the received energy. The Fig. 1 device has a flat transmit/receive transducer 16 for directing pulses towards the wall of tubular enclosure 10 via a conical reflector 20. Radial supports 18, members 24, 26, and acoustically transparent sleeve 30 are all stream-lined. Transducer 16 and reflector 20 are replaced by a cylindrical transducer 34 in the Fig. 3 embodiment. The Fig. 1 or 3 device may be included in the primary coolant piping of a nuclear reactor to detect fuel element failure (Fig. 5, not shown).
