Abstract

Process consists of raising the temp. of the element above the b.pt. of the reactor cooling liq., so that any liq. which has penetrated into the element boils, and examining the noise produced by the boiling liq. as an indication of leakage of the sleeve. A pulsed acoustic signal, associated with the upper plug of the combustible element, is produced and propagated along the wall of the sleeve. The presence of any cooling liq. in the element, or any excessively swollen pellets is measured by interpreting the echo pulses received at the transducer. The outer surface of the sleeve is isolated from contact with the cooling liq. normally used to maintain the element within a prescribed ranged. The noise produced at audio frequency by heat transfer fluid boiling in the element is checked as an indication of a fault in its sleeve. This gives two gps. of information, each sensitive to different faults, increasing the probability of detection and reducing errors. Defective combustible elements are detected, and their specific position in the combustible assembly is identified.
