Abstract

1,086,286. Ultrasonic testing. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAIS. April 6, 1965 [April 14, 1964], No. 14494/65. Headings H4D and H4J. In an ultrasonic pulse-echo flaw-detection system for examining the entire cross-section of a cylindrical workpiece as it passes a testing point so as to provide a quantitative indication of the flaws present, the transmitting-receiving transducer comprises a single block of piezoelectric material in the form of a solid of revolution and has a central aperture through which the workpiece passes. The solid of revolution may be a flat ring (Fig. 1) (or Figs. 2, 3, 5, 6, not shown), the volume included between two coaxial frustums of a cone (Fig. 4, not shown), or the volume included between two concentric spherical segments (Fig. 7, not shown). Ultrasonic energy may be directed towards the axis of the test-piece by a reflector or by a refracting member in the form of an aluminium or synthetic resin ring having a triangular crosssection (not shown), a trapezoidal cross-section (Fig. 5, not shown) or one of its faces concave (Fig. 6, not shown). The transducer and testpiece may be coupled by a water spray, or the test-piece may be passed through a water-filled tank as shown in Fig. 1. Flaw echoes are reproduced on an oscillograph.
