Abstract

1445990 Suction forming J E EVANS 21 Jan 1974 [1 Feb 1973] 5126/73 Heading B5A A suction-operated forming machine comprises a mould platen 3 and a suction pump which in operation of the machine is operable to withdraw air or other fluid from between the mould 4 and a sheet of moulding material positioned thereover, the pumping action of the pump being effected by a hand or foot operation by an operator. The pump may comprise a bellows or a piston 11 and cylinder 10 connected directly or indirectly via a pipe to a one-way valve 16 provided in a cover 1 supporting the platen 3. The piston 11 may comprise a flexible diaphragm clamped between a pair of metal discs 17, 18 and may be provided with a oneway valve 25 which allows passage of fluid therethrough whilst the piston 11 is returned adjacent the closed valve 26. The piston may be operated by a pedal 23 and return spring 24. The sheet of moulding material may be clamped in a frame 5 mounted on the cover 1 via four caliper hinges 6 to permit the sheet to be moved from a position adjacent a heater 7 slidably mounted on guides 8 to a position where it contacts the mould 4, the frame 5 engaging a gasket 27 to provide a seal about the platen 3.
