Abstract
971,925. Cupping; making boiler ends, vehicle wings, smoothing irons and reflectors. SIEMENS-ELECTROGERATE A.G. June 29, 1962 [July 7, 1961; May 23, 1962], No. 25116/62. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Division B5] An hydraulic deep-drawing process is characterized in that the pressure liquid acts as the lower die and shapes the drawn material over the drawing ram. Apparatus comprises a die ring 1 having a pressure container 2, a pressure valve 4, a pump 13 for pumping the liquid back to a container 5, a non-return valve 6 and a shaped ram 7 and blank holder 8. A sealing element 3 of e.g. leather, copper or rubber is inserted in a groove 10 of the die 1 and a number of ducts 11 connect the groove with the container 2. A blank 9 is clamped on the element 3 by the holder 8 and a programme control mechanism 12 operated to regulate the pressure in the container by admitting compressed air via an inlet 15 to one or more compensating cylinders 14. The ram 7 is lowered into contact with the blank which is deformed about the ram, the amount of deformation being controlled by the pressure in the container 2. In one embodiment a blank is drawn over a die ring 17 by a modified holder 18 to form a part 16 and is then subjected to a reverse drawing process, Fig. 6. Alternatively, a pre-pressed blank is used. In a further embodiment the container has inlet and outlet valves 31, 32 of the drawing edge of the die 1 and the lower edge 34 of the holder 8 have complementary curvatures. In operation the blank 9 is secured in position by pins 23, the holder 8 lowered to clamp the blank and form a flange therein, the container completely filled with fluid by raising a piston 27, air released via an electromagnetically-operated valve 25 and the ram 7 lowered to complete the drawing. The pressure in the container 2 is controlled by rods, chain drives, racks, lift-type valves, slide valves, or pistons (not shown). Materials such as steel, copper, brass or synthetic plastics are used. The fluid used may be water and may be used to heat the material either by heating the pressure liquid or introducing it in a hot state into the container. Articles such as boiler ends, searchlight reflectors, covers for smoothing irons and motor vehicle wings are produced by the process.
