Abstract
144,597. Burney, C. D. Nov. 22, 1916. Mines, marine; sweeping mines. - Relates to depresser paravanes of the kind which are towed at a predetermined depth astern of the ship, as described in Specifications 8117/15 and 144,593, and consists in forming the paravane of a float or buoy 145 (see plan, Fig. 1) connected to a plane or cambered plate 146 provided with adjustable rudders 147. The towing eye 148 is provided on a member 149 connected by stays 150, 151 to the plane and float respectively. The rudders may be controlled by an hydrostatic or a combined hydrostatic and gravity device, as described in Specification 144,593, to maintain the paravane at the set depth line. When employed against submarines, the paravane may carry a charge of explosive and be towed by an electric cable. The paravane may carry a cutting device as described in the above-mentioned Specifications. The depresser paravane may be connected to a member at the stem of the ship to which the deflector and protector paravanes are also attached so that the point of tow at the stem can be kept well down.
