Abstract

1445658 Agitating liquids F MOSER 3 June 1974 [4 June 1973] 24407/74 Heading B1C Chemical reactions are performed in a horizontal elongated container along which a fluid medium is passed in plug flow, a second medium being introduced through devices placed along the entire length of the container in the vicinity of its bottom to produce in the first medium a rotation about an axis parallel to the axis of plug flow. The container may be open or closed; as shown in Fig. 6 the second medium may be introduced through a supply pipe 5 and enter the first medium through simple apertures or jet nozzles 3 or sintered ceramic elements 4. There may be more than one row of nozzles 1, Fig. 8, and they may be more closely spaced in the region of the inlet of the first medium. The supply pipe may be raised somewhat if a solid sediment is produced. Applications referred to include the oxygenation of sewage, absorption of sulphur dioxide from exhaust gas, chlorination of hydrocarbons, alkylation of hydrocarbons with hydrofluoric acid, production of albumen from hydrocarbons, and polymerisation reactions including the agitation of a styrene butadiene reaction mass by nitrogen.
