Abstract
1,015,245. Treating gases and liquids with liquids. ALPINE A.G. MASCHINEFABRIK UND EISENGIESSEREI. June 14, 1962 [June 21, 1961], No. 22821/62. Headings B1F and B1R. In a process for carrying out physical and/or chemical reactions between a liquid and a gas or between two liquids, as e.g. in washing dustladen gases, drying gases, or liquid/liquid extraction, the liquid and gas or the two liquids are passed co-currently or countercurrently through a structure comprising a multiplicity of tubular elements joined together in zig-zag fashion and having no internal obstructions which would modify the inherent flow pattern of the structure when in use. As shown in Fig. 3, the tubular elements are rectangular with two chamfered edges and dimensioned as follows: b=2d; h =1.4 d ; s=0.2 d ; α=60 degrees, where d is the width of the element, b is the depth, h is the height, s is the chamfering and α the angle of inclination of the side walls of an element. Fig. 2 shows an apparatus for washing dust-laden gas and has pipes 7,8 and 9 through which the gas passes upwardly in parallel. Liquid is introduced through a pipe 12 and flow conditions in the pipes 7, 8 and 9 are controlled by valves 14. Excess liquid is removed from the washed gas in the portions of the pipes 7, 8 and 9 above the pipe 12 which contain plates 16.
