Abstract

1445394 Bolts INDUSTRIAL ACOUSTICS CO Inc 30 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40858/73 Heading F2H A safety bolt 10 for engagement with an internally threaded member 14 has a pawl 26 housed in a longitudinal slot 28 and pivoted to the bolt at 33 adjacent the leading end of the bolt, the free end 46 of the pawl, which lies within or adjacent to the threaded portion 20 of the bolt shank, being spring-loaded radially outwardly so that when the bolt is screwed into the threaded bore 22 of the member 14, as soon as the free end 46 of the pawl emerges from the exit surface 48 of the member 14 it is extended to latch against the surface 48. A leaf spring 34 acts between the pawl and the bottom of the slot 28. The pawl is retractable to lie wholly within the root diameter of the belt thread, and its extension from the slot is limited by engagement of a shoulder 52 of the pawl with the bottom of the slot. The pivot pin 33 of the pawl is hollow so that it may be sheared to allow release of the pawl and removal of the bolt from the member 14 when a sufficient torque is applied to the bolt. The bolt may have a head at its rear end (not shown) or may have a second screw-threaded rear end portion 18, as shown. A nut 38 can be locked to the bolt by the engagement of the inturned ends of a semicircular locking spring 40 with slots 42 in the nut and bores 44 in the bolt.
