Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A safety bolt comprises an element 39 having a shank 45 with an axis 34, the element having a headed end 36 and a threaded end 38, an axial passage 46 opening onto the end 38, and a laterally extending passage opening onto the shank exterior and intersecting the axial passage, a dog 40 slidably mounted in the laterally extending passage-adapted to extend beyond and retract within the shank and a member 50 movable in the axial passage and reactive with the dog to retract the same. In the embodiment described two lateral passages are provided for two diametrically opposed dogs 40, 41 the dogs being biased into the extended position by a spring 65. The member 50 has inclined surfaces which engage with inclined surfaces on the dogs such that as the member 50 is moved axially towards the head, the dogs are retracted within the shank to allow the bolt to be removed from its hole. As the bolt is applied to a hole the dogs are forced inwards until the dogs extend outwards behind the members 31, 32, 33 being connected. A nut 42 may then be applied to the threaded end. In another embodiment the member has cam surfaces and is rotated to retract the dogs.
