Oscillating-cylinder pumps; actuating pumps by hand and foot power.-In pumps especially applicable to the inflation of tyres and in which the operative stroke of the piston is obtained by the flattening of a toggle-joint which the piston-rod makes with a treadle or hand-lever, the pump barrel as it turns on its pivot is caused to advance to meet the advancing piston on the expulsion stroke. As shown in Fig. 7, on pressure being applied to the plate 9 the piston-rod 17 is caused to advance in the pump barrel 12 by reason of the cross bar 11 travelling in the slots 16. At the same time, the barrel in its descent comes for. ward to meet the piston connected to the rod 17, by reason of the eccentric pivoting 6 of the end of the pump barrel, the pivot 6 being contained within the slot 22, and in virtue of the connecting-link 23. A spring 19 returns the parts to their original positions. The air delivery pipe is connected at the end 18 of the barrel. In a simpler form, the slot 22 and the link 23 are omitted. A further modification is shown in Fig. 8 in which the eccentrically pivoted pump-barrel advances towards the piston by means of teeth engaging the rack 24.
