Abstract
1444549 Making dynamo-electric machines JOSEPH LUCAS ELECTRICAL CO Ltd 9 Nov 1973 [23 Nov 1972 22 Dec 1972] 54305/72 and 59563/72 Heading B3A A method of making a dynamo-electric machine comprises providing a hollow cylindrical yoke 11 having a plurality of axially extending poles 12-15 projecting radially inwardly of the yoke, positioning within the yoke a sinusoidal field winding (16), Fig. 2 (not shown), the external diameter of which is smaller than the internal diameter of the poles, and mechanically expanding the winding radially outwardly within the yoke so that axially extending portions of the winding enter between the poles. The winding is formed from aluminium or copper strip, which is insulated by either wrapping paper around the strip or extruding nylon around the strip as it is manufactured. The winding is secured by coating the inner surface of the yoke with an adhesive or by dipping the assembled winding and yoke in an insulating lacquer, which is subsequently stoved. The winding is expanded by means of a mandrel consisting of a solid core enclosed in an inflatable sheath. The winding is preferably wound to its full size initially and reduced by stretching and compressing prior to insertion in the yoke. The yoke is formed by stamping indentations corresponding to the poles 12-15 in a flat mild steel sheet and rolling it to cylindrical form with the edges of the sheet located at the centre line of one of the poles.
