Abstract
1302203 Making scanning coils EMI Ltd 9 March 1970 14903/69 Heading B3A [Also in Division H1] An electrical coil 12 is made by rolling an electrically conductive foil 3 about a mandrel 1 and cutting an annular, substantially cylindrical element 12 from the roll at right-angles to the axis of the mandrel to form two parallel connected half-coils. The foil, which may be of copper or aluminium, is wound around the mandrel 1 with the turns of the foil separated by insulating material 4. The insulation may be formed by anodizing the aluminium. The mandrel is provided with a groove, which houses either a conductive rod 2, extending the length of the mandrel, or the tightly rolled inner end of the foil. The outer end of the foil may be left free or it may have a conductive rod secured thereto. An adhesive may be added during winding or the roll may be impregnated with a suitable liquid substance, which is subjected to a hardening treatment to form a machinable block 14. The coil is cut by boring a hole 10 through the block 14 and a cylindrical cut 11 is then made concentric with the hole to form a cylindrical coil, which comprises a pair of saddle coils. The cut coil is de-burred in an etching bath to prevent short-circuiting at the cut faces. Saddle coils may be made with more than one radius of curvature to suit electron beam devices not having uniform cylindrical shape. Two cylindrical coils are mounted concentrically over the neck of a cathode-ray tube and are connected to sources of deflecting waveforms.
