Abstract

144,442. Norton, A. J. May 2, 1919. Knitted fabrics.-Continuous lengths 62 of reversible or other tubular seamless ribbed fabric patterned by tuck stitches are cut on the lines 63, 64, 65 to make the legs and insteps of stockings or socks. The cut edges are run on to a straight frame such as a Cotton's footer or a seamless hosiery machine and the article is completed by Knitting a " Niantie " or seamless heel 66, foot bottom 68, and toe 67. The tubes may also be used for garment sleeves. Tubes of large diameter may be cut up for bodies of jerseys, sweaters, sports coats, &c. Circular machines. - Rib-machines in which the rib needles 7 are mounted in swinging jacks 8 are provided with means for accumulating loops on the rib or frame needles or both whereby self or coloured patterned effects are obtained. The needles 7, 11 are arranged in groups of three or four or otherwise and the arrangement may be such that about half of these groups alternately knit and tuck for two or more courses at a time while the remainder knit all the time. The machine bed 3 rotates in unison with the cylinder 1 upon a fixed sleeve 15 through which projects a sliding auxiliary cam 24, Fig. 1, situated above the usual fixed clearing cam 23 and operated by a bellcrank 29, 27 connected to a rod 32 the end of which is held by a spring 36 against the face of a pattern wheel 48. The rib needles a which are to form tuck stitches when required are notched at 22 so as to miss the clearing cam 23 and also the cam 24 when it is in the position shown in Fig. 1. When the cam 24 is advanced under pattern control the needles a will clear and knit like the ordinary needles b. The frame needles comprise short-butted patterning needles c and long-butted ordinary needles d. The needles d are raised by a fixed clearing-cam 40 and the needles c are cleared or not cleared according as a supplementary clearing cam 41 mounted on a slide 42 is moved up or down under confrol of the pattern wheel 48. The outward end of the slide 42 is held by a spring in the path of a series of cams 47 the position of which on the wheel 48 determines the sequence of tucking and ordinary knitting on the frame needles. An inner series control the patterning rib needles. The wheel 48 is driven by a pawl 51 and bell-crank 53 the inner end of which has a roller 55 running on a cam 57 attached to the underside of the plate 58 which rotates with the cylinder 1 and bed 3.
