Abstract

1444183 Direct reduction of iron ore LUMMUS CO 19 July 1973 [20 July 1972] 34358/73 Heading C7D In a process for the production of pre-reduced iron oxide pellets, a pelletized mixture of iron ore, liquid carbonaceous binder and a sulphur scavenger is reduced at 1800‹-2500‹F, wherein (a) if the C present in the pellets is sufficient only to effect 85% or less reduction, the heating of the pellets from 1500‹F to the reduction takes less than 1 hour, and (b) if the C is sufficient to reduce greater than 85%, the heating takes from 1-6 hours. The S scavenger is CaO, CaCl 2 , NaCI, CaSO 4 , CaCO 3 , MgCl 2 , MgO, FeCl 3 , dolomite or a mixture thereof, and is present from 0À01-5 wt. per cent. In the pelletizing process, a pre-heated mixture of iron ore, e.g. tacouite, and scavenger is sprayed with hot oil, e.g. residual oil or coal tar pitch, which cracks on contact to deposit C on the mixture. The carbonized mixture is ground, fed to a pelletizer and hence to a coking kiln. Pre-heated ore and oil are added to the pellets prior to coking. The resulting pellets may have a S content of 0À03% if to be used in an electric furnace, or 0À25% for a blast furnace. The reduction may take place with additional external C present, e.g. coal, coke or a mixture thereof.
